A few years ago, I saw some very expensive guinea fowl feather baubles in an interiors shop and always wished I’d bought some. As I wondered around Sostrene Greene, some little bags full of guinea fowl feathers caught my eye and I knew exactly what I was going to do with them!
For these baubles, you will need:
- Polystyrene balls or old baubles
- Jute twine or string
- Hot glue gun
- Feathers
If you’re using polystyrene balls, the first thing to do is make a loop to hang the bauble on the tree – simply loop and knot a length of twine and glue it to the top of the ball. It’s ideal to repurpose old baubles for this and you can replace the loop with twine if you prefer.
Sort through your feathers and put around 8 small feathers aside. Next, starting at the bottom of the ball, glue the feathers on, working around in a circular motion and moving up towards the top of the ball. Beware, it can get very messy! Each layer will cover the top of the feathers below, leaving just the fluffy part of the feathers visible. When you reach the top, glue the small feathers neatly around the jute loop.

When finished, your bauble should look something like this:

For my other rustic bauble, I wrapped jute twine around the polystyrene balls and fixed into place using a hot glue gun – again, you can re-use old baubles for this.

I might try using vintage book paper to decoupage a bauble next…where’s my glue gun?…
