Creating an industrial inspired teen boys bedroom
When we built our house in 2011, my son was five and about to start Primary school. He loved his preppy, red, white and blue room which he filled with his favourite Lego technic models and 1:18 scale model cars. Fast forward to 2019 and he had outgrown his room and had patiently waited for us to update it whilst we had our garage/annexe build project on the go (see link here).

He is a boy after my own heart and created a pinterest board of all the things he liked and it was very obvious that he wanted an industrial inspired bedroom.

Whilst I am always full of ideas and inspiration, I turn to my ‘facilitator’ ie, Husband to bring my ideas to life. Don’t get me wrong, I get stuck in with it all and I’m chief painter and decorator here at HH HQ, but when it comes to joinery, my skills are woefully inadequate.
How it all came together
I fell in love with a gorgeous industrial pipe shelf/desk combo in Restoration Hardware. For those of you who haven’t yet discovered the wonder that is Restoration Hardware in the US, then you’re missing out. It’s such a shame that they don’t sell here in the UK and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a post brexit UK/US trade deal to make my dreams come true.
I digress. Said shelf unit could not be purchased in the UK so with the help of Pinterest and a scale drawing, the ‘facilitator’ got to work in creating the shelf unit using malleable iron pipe fittings and scaffold boards.
I bought new scaffold boards and aged them using a mixture of tea, wire wool and white vinegar (see here for tutorial).

When it came to deciding on a bed, we chose a small double (4ft) to keep the room looking spacious. We chose an ottoman divan base from Sueno in black linen and the Facilitator made a rustic headboard using pallet wood.
The walls were painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Mole’s Breath’ and skirting boards painted in ‘Ammonite’.

The best thing we did was to create a ‘music cupboard’ utilising one of the two built in wardrobes in the room. Whilst we lost storage space, the ability to shut the door on the drums cables, wires and amp is priceless.

The finishing touches in the room include the oak coat hook (courtesy of the Facilitator), storage boxes, baskets and picture frames from Ikea and and wood/metal table lamp by DAR lighting.
We’re so pleased with the results and know that this room will see our son through his teen years.
